WALMART FULFILLMENT PRICING, EXPLAINED

How Walmart Multichannel Solutions pricing actually works

Walmart publishes one per unit fee that bundles picking, packing and outbound shipping. That makes it easy to read and hard to compare. Here is how the number is built, what sits outside it, and how to put it next to an independent 3PL quote without fooling yourself.

What is inside the Walmart fee, and what is not

✓One number covers picking, packing and outbound shipping for one unit. Standard delivery (3 to 5 business days) and Expedited (2 business days) each have their own rate card, and speeds are not guaranteed from October through December.
✓Shipping weight decides the tier. Under 1 lb Walmart uses the unit weight. Over 1 lb it uses the greater of unit weight or dimensional weight, which is length times width times height in inches divided by 139.
✓A packaging allowance of 0.25 lb is added before rounding up. In practice a 2 oz item lands in the 6 to 12 oz tier, so the lightest published rate rarely applies to a real product.
✓Discounts apply when one order holds several units of the same item. How mixed orders of different items are billed is worth confirming in Seller Center before you model your average cart.
✓Storage is billed separately per cubic foot per month, with a higher rate from October to December on inventory held more than 30 days, and a much higher rate after 365 days.
✓Outside the fee: inbound freight to Walmart's network, prep, returns processing and oversize surcharges. Orders ship in unbranded packaging. The 6 to 15 percent referral fee still applies to Walmart.com sales, but not to multichannel orders from your other channels.

Walmart's own published rates (not ShipByClick pricing)

THIRD PARTY RATES: PUBLISHED BY WALMART, OCTOBER 2026
Up to 6 oz shipping weight, per unit$7.45
6 oz to 1 lb, per unit$7.75 to $8.05
2 to 30 lb, per unit$8.65 + $0.60 per lb over 2 lb
Storage, per cubic foot per month$0.75, $2.25 in Q4 after 30 days

These are Walmart's figures for standard speed, taken from its public Multichannel Solutions page. They are not ShipByClick prices. Expedited 2 day rates run about $2 per unit higher. Walmart can change them at any time; verify in Seller Center before deciding.

How to compare it against a 3PL in four steps

01
Pick one real order
Your most common order: unit weight, box dimensions, number of items, and a typical destination. Averages hide the tiers.
02
Build the Walmart number
Add 0.25 lb, round up, find the tier, then add your share of storage per unit. Use the fee preview in Seller Center as the final word.
03
Build the 3PL number
Pick and pack, plus receiving, plus storage per order, plus real carrier postage. Postage is the big variable, so ask for an actual rate, not a guess.
04
Compare totals at your volume
Multiply the gap by monthly orders. Then weigh it against what the fee does not buy: your packaging, inserts, kitting and a person who answers.

Five things that surprise sellers about the Walmart fee

1
The lightest tier is mostly theoretical

Because 0.25 lb of packaging is added before rounding, almost any physical product with a box clears 6 oz. Budget from the second tier, not the first.

2
Dimensional weight kicks in at 1 lb

A light but bulky item, say a 1.2 lb pillow in a 14 by 12 by 6 inch box, is billed at about 7.3 lb. Measure the shipping box, not the product.

3
Q4 storage triples after 30 days

Inventory that sits more than 30 days between October and December moves from $0.75 to $2.25 per cubic foot. Slow movers you stock for the holidays cost more to hold exactly when you need them.

4
The fee is per unit, not per order

A two item order of different SKUs is two fees. Discounts exist for multiples of the same item. If your average cart mixes products, model that cart, not a single unit.

5
Getting inventory in is its own cost

Inbound freight, labeling and prep to Walmart's requirements sit outside the fee. So do returns processing and oversize surcharges. Add them to the per unit math before you compare.

Where an independent 3PL prices differently

An independent 3PL usually splits the same work into parts: a pick and pack fee per order, a receiving fee per unit, storage per cubic foot, and carrier postage billed at cost. At ShipByClick that is $1.75 per order with the first item included, $0.50 for each additional item, $0.15 per unit received and $0.57 per cubic foot per month, with no software fee and no contract. And the rates do not move with the calendar: no peak season surcharge, no Q4 storage increase, no aged inventory surcharge. The number you budget in January is the number you pay in December.

The split looks more complicated, but it does three things the bundled fee cannot. It charges per order rather than per unit, so a three item cart is $2.75 of labor, not three separate fees. It lets you see and shop the postage, with your own carrier account or ours. And it does not change the price when the box is yours: branded packaging, inserts and packing instructions are part of the standard service.

The honest caveat is postage. Walmart's scale buys it good carrier rates, and on a light single item order the bundled fee can land close to, or under, a 3PL total. That is why the comparison has to be done on a real order, with real postage, not on headline rates. The Walmart fulfillment alternative page has a calculator built for exactly that, and the full ShipByClick price list has every other fee in one place.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Walmart Multichannel fee include shipping?

Yes. The published per unit rate covers picking, packing and outbound delivery at the speed you choose. It does not include inbound freight, prep, returns or storage.

Is there a referral fee on multichannel orders?

Walmart states that orders from your other channels fulfilled through Multichannel Solutions do not carry a referral fee. Sales on Walmart.com itself still carry the normal 6 to 15 percent marketplace referral fee.

Can I use my own branded boxes with Walmart Multichannel Solutions?

Walmart states that multichannel orders ship in unbranded packaging. If packaging is part of your brand experience, that is one of the main reasons sellers look at an independent 3PL instead.

Does Walmart require a minimum volume?

Walmart does not publish a minimum order volume or a monthly fee for the program. You do need an active WFS account first. ShipByClick has no minimum order volume either, with a $200 monthly activity minimum across services that shipping counts toward.

Where do I find the exact Walmart fee for my product?

In Seller Center, the fee preview for each item shows the fulfillment fee at its shipping weight. Treat that as the authoritative number; the rate cards on public pages are a guide.
